Would I tell my younger self to follow a career in Would I tell my younger self to follow a career in Events?

As we celebrate International Woman’s Day, I am wondering if I would tell my younger self to follow a career in Event Management.

Being in events has been many long hours, late nights/early mornings, carrying boxes, carting valuables in hand luggage, putting up banners, clearing dinner plates and half empty champagne glasses, taking to the stage, improvising, switching to crisis mode and back to a smiling face in a flash!

Yes, it’s hard and sometimes relentless work, but when you see where a career in this industry can take you, it can be a hugely satisfying path to take.

It’s the sense of achievement, feeling the adrenaline rush after you have put all the fires out and delivered a great experience. The nature of events allows you to explore a world of different industries, from sports to pharma, academic, government, non-profit and many more.

The people, networking opportunities and communities you can meet, places you can travel to and cultures you can explore are almost endless. Or, if you are the more reserved type, you can put all your energies into the strategic side, managing spreadsheets, timelines, and budgets.

The events industry allows you to be flexible, no two days are ever the same. Hybrid working now offers you the chance to create a work/life balance.

In the UK, getting started is easy. For example, Realise delivers the Event Apprenticeship Programme, a proven way for event organizers to develop new talent or offer a new path to employees. It’s government-funded, “earn while you learn” training.

There are terrific professional communities, too, to help you connect and grow. Check outHere are two:
•	@wearenowie – National Organization of Women in Events
•	MICE.com – Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions

So, YES! Looking back, I wouldn’t hesitate to tell my younger self to go for it! Looking forward, I am excited about my new journey with the Realise team.

Fellow women event professionals, would you agree? Let’s share our stories to encourage those coming into our world next …
